Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Designer Drugs (DREADDs)

DREADDs based chemogenetic tools allow neuroscientists to manipulate the activity of neural pathways in the brain with a high level of specificity. We are using DREADDS to temporarily inactivate specific pathways linking ventral pallidum with thalamus and thalamus with prefrontal cortex to understand the function of these pathways during goal-directed behavior. We focus on unilateral inactivation to preserve behavioral performance and to use recordings of contralateral neurons as a control for the effects of ipsilateral inactivation.
