Eastern American toad* Anaxyrus Americana
Identification: The Eastern American Toad is approximately 2-3.5 inches long. They can have brown, olive, red, and olive colorations, with their chests spotted darker colors and a light middorsal stripe. This toad will have 1 or 2 warts on each dark spot through the whole body. The warts on the hind legs will be enlarged. American toad tadpoles are black (different from other tadpoles).
Habitat: found in many areas: forested or open spaces, uplands, wetlands, backyards
Other: Males are smaller than females. During cold weather, American toad’s will hibernate terrestrially by digging back into the soil and burrowing under the frostline, as they are not freeze tolerant.
