For many Americans, exposure to recent media examples of reflexive violence perpetrated on Black Americans has blurred the boundaries between the historical record with which our country is so familiar and the problems still facing us today. From this epicenter of misfortune and violence, Enrico Riley’s exhibition The Blues in Me: Witnessing Love presents paintings as a means to remember and reflect upon grief, but also to investigate the linkages between the old world and new, not to recycle old stories but to seek paths for forging new narratives that express hope in breaking generational cycles of injustice. How can we learn from centuries of racial inequality and the current social justice movement to move toward reconciliation and healing?
