In the student proposal by Brianna Belisle, she is making a proposal to the university of New Hampshire to pave the dirt path behind Adams tower to provide a safe and well lit path. She also believes that this will create a safer presence around Adams Tower as the makeshift path goes through the woods which is notorious for illegal drug activity late at night. She had researched that the path is used to get to navigate in-between many parts of campus. In the paper she wrote “Adam’s Tower path is currently used as a connector to the gym, the visitor parking lots, the Woodsides, surrounding residential halls, Stillings Dining Hall, and classes on the west side of campus” (1). She also found that major periods of traffic during the week were during peak gym times as well as dinner time which was between the hours of roughly 5:30pm to 9 pm (1). The research was used to show how times of major foot traffic on the path happen near the same times as the presumed drug use on the path making it dangerous for many of the people using it. She found that only around a third of the campus partakes in reactional drugs meaning the path was creating and uncomfortable environment for many students. The un paved path starts very steep and has multiple rocks which can lead to minor injuries. At night it can be difficult to do so as there in poor light as she had stated which could lead to more serious injuries. The research showed that this path becomes much more dangerous during winter months as it is not treated like walks and streets and has icy patches through-out. An important topic she brought up in her research was the danger of rape around that area on weekends as that path would be used by intoxicated students and the path is not easily assessed by the police. There is not ethical dilemma to this proposal as its seems to only provide a safer path on campus at night as well as possibly lower the crime rate. In my opinion the strongest part of the proposal was the dangers that can be faced during the winter months as the snow makes the campus difficult to travel on foot. Also since many people on this campus don’t use the proper foot wear to get around snow and ice at must times this would be the must compelling piece to her paper. The weaker point that was made on lowering drug use as this campus is surrounded by woods and people would find other locations (1).
