The Black King of Justus van Gent's "The Adoration of the Magi"

The Adoration of the Magi
by Justus van Gent

Mary holds the recently born Jesus, Joseph looking over her shoulder, as an old King kneels to the child. Another King stands to the side, ready to show his admiration for the son of God. Huge crowds spill from far lands across the sea, desperate to get a look at the savior.

Then, there is the third King. A King being doted on by a servant. A King with extravagant clothing. A King standing away from Jesus, not even looking in his direction. Who is this man that stands out more than Jesus?
