SUST 401 Experience:

I took Surveying Sustainability in the Fall of 2016. It was one of the first  classes I had ever taken here at UNH as I was a freshmen that year. I had heard about the newly introduced major, and decided to give it a shot. Through that class, I realized that the Sustainability dual major was for me! It was unlike any of the other classes I was taking at the time, being more conversation and action driven. In that course, we learned the basis of sustainability through the three pillars: environment, economy, and equity. These three major components of sustainability have been the basis of the entire major. 401 was crucial for learning the background, and some applications of the field. It was very interesting to me as each student came from different majors and backgrounds. We recieved a first look at sustainability projects and initiatives through a few different fieldtrips. The most notable fieldtrip was to the aquaponics center that was on campus. Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture and hydroponics. Fish are raised and plants grow without soil in an integrated system. This class had me come out of my shell when I was a freshmen, and motivated me to further study within the Sustainability field and major!
