The first sustainability elective I took was Introduction to Our Energy System and Sustainable Energy. Before taking this elective I knew nothing about this topic but after taking this class it was one of my favorites. In this class we learned about the resilience of the electrical grid. We learned about traditional technologies and production of energy and then how introduction of sustainable substitutions. The class taught how energy is priced in the free market. We explored how the transition to a completely renewable grid would work within out system. In class we studied the renewable portfolio standards set by each state as they set goals to transition away from fossil fuels. NR 507 sparked my interest in renewable energy and influenced me to take other electives related to renewable energy in the future.
