NR 784: Sustainable Living

As my last elective, I took NR 784, Sustainable Living. This course made us think critically about how we as a society live today, and how that will need to change in order to keep our planet healthy, and how to do so in a way that is equitable for all. It stood out to me as this was not your typical lecture course where you sit and listen to a professor, but it was a discussion-based class, where the ones teaching were the students. It was an interesting dynamic, and it allowed us all to hear different perspectives. The professor, Dr. Novak-Colwell, spent many years living in India, so she encouraged us to think about sustainability from an Eastern lens, and not what we are used to in the US. This perhaps was the most interesting part of the class, as sustainability means very different things across the globe, and many countries are doing very different things to achieve the same end goal. This course made me more conscious about how I live my day-to-day life. As a final project, we took "inventories" of our daily activities to see our true impact on the earth. It was truly eye-opening and has made me rethink how I want to live my life in the future.
